10 Essential Moving Day Preparation Tips
Alright, so you’ve found your new place, set the date for your removal, and you’re looking around thinking, what’s next? Removals are complicated. There are so many little details to attend to that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. You have an entire home or office to get packed and organized, paperwork to deal with, decisions to make. Post office, landlords, utility companies – try to take it on at the last minute and you can find stress levels rising to their breaking point.
But don’t worry. At Gentleman and a Van, we’ve got you covered. We’ve covered Sydney removals of every size and for every purpose for more than two decades. We’ve seen it all, and we’ve put together a checklist to help you make sure you got your i’s dotted and your t’s crossed, so when moving day comes, you can meet it with a calm smile.
So take a breath, relax, and get ready to take some notes:
1. The first step is to make yourself a checklist. If you wait ‘til the day of, you may find yourself skipping steps, running around, and generally making things more complicate than they have to be. It helps to do this on the computer so it can be easily updated. There are always things that don’t occur in the planning stages, so it helps to be able to shift it around when you do think of them.
2. Don’t forget about the landlord(s). If you’ve been renting, there is the matter of satisfying the lease and picking up a security deposit. And, if you’re moving to a rented home, then you’ll want to make sure everything is ready for you to move right in when the time comes.
3. Remember the utility company. You’ll want to make sure you have water and electric when you move into your new home and you might have to cancel or transfer utilities from the old place to the new. Some utility companies also use deposits, so if you’ve got one to collect, that’s a nice little detail you’ll appreciate in the moment.
4. Pop into the post office to change your address. Forgetting about this in the rush of the move can have you driving over to the old place multiple times a week until things are sorted out. That’s a hassle you don’t need, and it might lead to important information missed in the shuffle. So, take a half hour, sort it out, and rest easy when the time comes.
5. Moving supplies! Here’s a step you’re not likely to skip, but if you have your preparations in place beforehand, you won’t have to run out and make last minute purchases. There are a number of ways to get free boxes, like speaking with your local grocery store or checking on Gumtree. This will work for more durable items that will stand a bit of jostling. For your more fragile belongings, you’ll want sturdy, professional moving boxes, as well as packing paper and bubble wrap. A quality Sydney removalist will make sure that these supplies are on offer.
6. Hire a truck or work with a professional removalist? If you’ve got a load of extra available muscle and a relatively simple move on your hands, you might want to opt for hiring a truck. If so, make sure the reservations are made for the day you’ll need it, and that your friends or family can lock your move into their schedule. On the other hand, a professional Sydney home removal service can take a load off your mind – and your back!
7. Time to clean house! A move is a great time to clear up the clutter and break out of the rut. If you’re like most people, you’ve collected up a heap of stuff in your home that you never actually use, and might never even think about. Moving things you don’t need is an unnecessary expense, so let go of the broken furniture, the piles of stuff collected “just in case” and then forgotten about. This will save time and money, and it will make sure your new space feels open and inviting.
8. What’s in the pantry and refrigerator? The last thing you want to deal with on moving day is a load of spoiling food. Plan ahead and get rid of anything you won’t eat and anything that will go off during the move. This is an easy one to miss, but it can save you a headache.
9. Have you considered your pets? If you have pets, then removals could involve cat or dog carriers, separate vehicles, arrangements to transport aquariums, or a number of other measures, depending on what type of pet you have.
10. Remember that things might not go exactly as planned. Whether it’s weather or traffic, unexpected delays, friends or family not showing up on schedule, odds are, you’ll have something unexpected drop in. Plan a bit of extra time so that you’re not squeezed, and try to take things in stride. The more you can keep your cool while changing course, the smoother and more efficient everything will go.
